Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit

Research

The unit has contributed significantly to the philosophy of fracture management. Most of the research has been clinical and has mainly been concerned with the outcome of various methods of fracture management. Much of the clinical research in the 1980’s involved the management of long-bone fractures with reamed intramedullary nailing.  The unit remains the world’s foremost exponent of reamed intramedullary nailing and much of the work carried out in the last ten years is now being corroborated by other centers.

R I Stirling Bequest

The University holds a bequest in memory of Robert Ingleton Stirling, a Consultant Surgeon at the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital, who died in 1970. Applications are invited for funding from the bequest, which is administered by a committee set up for that purpose. Awards are intended to fund fellowships for trainees, meetings abroad for trainees presenting papers and/or posters and meetings abroad for consultants. Priority will be given to trainees
