History

Roberta was a native Texan and a converted Scot. She was instrumental in persuading her husband Don to enter orthopaedic surgery. In the mid-1960s, upon completion of his residency training in Texas, they came to Edinburgh for a fellowship. Edinburgh became her favourite place in earth. Robbie, as she was affectionately known, spent as much time as possible in her adopted city. She actively supported the local arts community and was an avid cultural ambassador to her many international visitors.

The sponsorship of SORT-IT fulfills her wish to support orthpaedic education, and is an appropriate memorial of her life. The inaugural Roberta Vanderpool Lecture was given in 2004.
